Discovering the Magdalen Islands: A Tourist Handbook

Discovering the Îles de la Madeleine

The Îles de la Madeleine, a string of islands connected by sand dunes, are nestled in the Gulf of St. Lawrence. Closer to Prince Edward Island than the Gaspé Peninsula, these islands are steeped in Acadian heritage and are home to a mix of French, Scottish, English, and Irish communities.

Visitors to the Îles de la Madeleine can indulge in water sports, bird-watching, and tranquil walks along the dunes, with August being the prime time to visit. The archipelago's name dates back to 1629 when Samuel de Champlain charted "La Magdeleine." The islands are known for their red and gray sandstone cliffs, shaped by erosion into stunning formations and expansive sandy beaches.
